Artistic Director and General Director
Roberta is the founder and General Director of Golden Gate Opera. She helped achieve the company’s non-profit status in 1996, created Outreach Opera-tunities Programs for schools, and has served as President of the Board since 2010. During her leadership, Golden Gate Opera achieved Professional Company Membership in Opera America in 2011, received numerous awards for marketing and production and in 2014 was awarded a Travel Grant by Opera America to see a world premiere by another opera company. GGO presented fully staged and concert operas in San Francisco and established opera seasons in Marin County starting in 2005 after a 20 year absence of that art form.
She led Golden Gate Opera in its development, first through performances in San Francisco in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor’s Florence Gould Theatre from 1998-2004, and then in productions in Marin County at the Marin Civic Center’s Theatres. She founded GGO’s Outreach Opera-tunities enrichment program for school children, enabling the company to enrich almost 100,000 K-12 children to date, going into schools and as well as bringing school students to the theatre for a field trip experience of the whole opera with every opera produced. Roberta has lead GGO in presenting full operas at Marin Center from the standard repertoire, since 2005 such as Butterfly, Carmen, Gianni Schicchi, I Pagliacci, CavalleriaRusticana, Hansel and Gretel and developed a new work with Lincoln and Booth’s first staged workshop performance in 2012, sponsored in part by Dominican University of California. She helped facilitate and bring to Marin County international collaboration with Golden Gate Opera of singers from The Opera of the Croatian National Theater who performed Haydn’s Der Apotheker at Mill Valley Community Center, including free performance for seniors and Mill Valley Middle School students, and ticketed performance for the public. She has developed second stage innovative up-close opera performances throughout Marin since 2005 and has brought the outreach to schools to other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. GGO’s 2013 theme was “Opera in Unusual Places” and opened with GGO’s outdoor performance in the meadow at the International Sausalito Art Festival.
